In the Intensive Care Units at The Queen's Medical Center, we are committed to providing high-quality, patient-centered care for you or your loved one. Our physicians (Intensivists) complete additional fellowship training to specialize in critical care medicine and to provide complex, evidence-based care to our patients. In addition to our Intensivists, specially trained nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and other providers are here, working as a team, to focus on our patients in settings designed to provide optimal care.

JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides critical care clinical services for the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) patients at The Queen's Medical Center (QMC) through direct patient care and teaching and supervision of students and residents from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and assigned residents from other programs.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides in-house services for continuous twelve (12) hour periods from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. as scheduled by the Medical Director of MICU or his/her designate. Serves as the attending physician for his/her own patients in the MICU and serves as a consultant when requested. Assists the attending and/or consultant physician in the management of patients in the MICU. In emergent situations in the MICU, when the physician is not the attending or consultant, evaluates and stabilizes patients until an attending or consultant physician can be contacted and/or arrives. Directs the management of such patient until such time as the attending or consultant physician arrives to assume responsibility to direct care. The attending or consultant physician may delegate responsibility to the physician, allowing him/her to continue to direct care for specific patients in the MICU. Evaluates patients in the Medical Center's Emergency Room for potential admission to the MICU. Evaluates hospitalized patients who have become unstable and are considered for transfer to the MICU. Responds immediately to assist in the care of critically ill patients anywhere in the Medical Center as requested by an attending or consultant physician. Supervises and assists house staff in the evaluation and management of team care patients. Teaches and supervises students and residents from the John A. Burns School of Medicine and assigned residents from other programs. Participates in the education of nursing staff and other allied health care professionals in the MICU. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of an accredited School of Medicine or EC FMG certification. Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawaii. Fellowship trained in critical care. Board certified in internal medicine and board certified or board qualified in critical care medicine and pulmonology. Qualified for an appointment on the faculty of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. During the period of employment, shall be and remain a member of the QMC medical staff in good standing with appropriate privileges without restriction.
