Description
YOU MUST COMPLETE THE TALENT MARKET APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION .
The Cato Institute seeks a policy analyst to work on the psychology of human progress. As the world improves along many material and moral dimensions, some people deny progress outright, while others point to possibly worsening psychological dimensions of progress, including the rise in anxiety and a crisis of meaning in wealthy countries. Successful candidates will analyze potentially negative psychological impacts of progress and those aspects of negativity bias that hinder widespread acknowledgment of real, measurable progress. He or she will help us understand ways to overcome that bias.
More broadly, a successful candidate will analyze the psychological impact of material abundance, plurality of values, and falling rates of violence on beings who evolved under opposite conditions; identify motivations that lead to policies that undermine human wellbeing in the long run; and develop proposals that will help to ensure the continuation of human progress, while being compatible with economic and civil freedoms.
The successful candidate must have an advanced academic background in at least two of the following fields of study: evolutionary psychology (e.g., negativity bias, zero-sum thinking, tribalism, etc.), cultural psychology (e.g., decline in organized religion, apocalyptic thinking, etc.), social psychology (e.g., social comparison, hedonic treadmill, envy, etc.), existential psychology (e.g., meaning, scarcity vs. abundance mindset, protection vs. growth, anxiety and unhappiness) and developmental psychology (e.g., excessive supervision of children, structure versus play, social media and brain maturation, self-reinforcement groups, etc.).
The projected salary range for this role is $75,000-110,000. Compensation is based on the educational background, experience, and skills of the successful candidate.
The Policy Analyst will report to Marian Tupy , founder and editor of HumanProgress.org , a project of the Cato Institute. This position can be based virtually anywhere in the U.S., with strong preference given to candidates who can work in a hybrid capacity at the Washington D.C. office.
About Cato
The Cato Institute is a public policy research organization—a think tank—dedicated to the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Its scholars and analysts conduct independent, nonpartisan research on a wide range of policy issues.
Founded in 1977, Cato owes its name to Cato’s Letters, a series of essays published in 18th-century England that presented a vision of society free from excessive government power. Those essays inspired the architects of the American Revolution. And the simple, timeless principles of that revolution — individual liberty, limited government, and free markets – turn out to be even more powerful in today’s world of global markets and unprecedented access to information than Jefferson or Madison could have imagined. Social and economic freedom is not just the best policy for free people, it is the indispensable framework for the future.
Cato Institute is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
