We are seeking a full-time Medical Interpreter to join our team, with primary responsibilities in Unit 1, and the Community-Based Acute Treatment (CBAT) program. The interpreter will also be assigned to other departments as needed.
Unit 1 is an inpatient program that provides prompt response to psychiatric emergencies with comprehensive assessment and treatment for children and adolescents. The program offers high-quality individualized psychiatric crisis care for youth, ages three through nineteen, of all developmental abilities and diagnostic categories. The focus of treatment involves restoration of safety, targeting high-risk behaviors, and most frequently, reduction of suicidal behaviors.
The Community Based Acute Treatment (CBAT) Program at Franciscan Children's is an intensive, short-term acute residential unit for children and adolescents experiencing behavioral and emotional difficulties.
The ideal candidate will deliver accurate interpretation services to ensure effective communication between patients, families, and both clinical and administrative staff.
Responsibilities for Unit 1 and CBAT:
  • Attending group therapy sessions with the patient and interpreting interactions between the group leader, other participants, and the patient to ensure full understanding and engagement.
  • Attending school sessions with the patient to interpret communication from the teacher and other students, ensuring the patient fully understands and can participate in the classroom environment.
  • Providing interpretation during individual therapy sessions.
  • Attending psychiatric meetings with the patient to interpret discussions, typically focused on medications, psychiatric symptoms, suicide risk assessments, and diagnoses.
  • Spending designated time with the patient in the general milieu to support their ability to communicate needs to staff-such as requests related to personal care, meal preferences, and other daily living needs-especially in the absence of a parent or guardian.
  • Spending time with the patient in the milieu to facilitate social interactions with peers and support participation in activities-such as card games, group events, and creative projects-by interpreting instructions and conversations as needed.
  • Accompanying the patient during medication administration to ensure they understand the medications being given, while providing interpretation of the nurse's instructions and explanations.
  • Supporting the patient in expressing any safety-related concerns, particularly those involving suicidal thoughts or feelings, as they arise.
While the interpreter's primary responsibilities are focused on Unit 1 and the Community-Based Acute Treatment (CBAT) program, they will also support additional departments as needed. These include the dental operating room, Units 2 and 3, the Kennedy Day School (KDS), the Children's Wellness Initiative (CWI) School-Based Counseling Program, and the therapy departments (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Pathology).
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Help with daily schedule preparation
  • Assist with on-the-job training and mentoring of new interpreters as requested by the manager.
  • Support the office operations by answering and following up with phone calls, assisting with confirmation and scheduling of future appointments, document encounters on the interpreter tracking system.
  • Perform other work duties as needed or directed to meet the needs of the department.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 60 hours of Medical Interpreter Training is required
  • Medical Interpreter Certificate is required
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree is preferred or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of experience working in a hospital setting is preferred.
  • Ability to accurately translate documents from English to Spanish is required.
  • Advance knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.
